A split divides one bank transaction across two or more categories so each portion lands in the right budget. If the categories you want are not in your list yet, you can create them in the category picker on the Split transaction window — you do not need to leave this flow.
Add a split
- Go to the Transactions page.
- Click the arrow on the right-hand side of the transaction you want to split. This opens the transaction editing drawer on the right.
- Click Split transaction to open the split menu.
- Choose a category for each portion and enter the amount. Use Create New Category at the bottom of the picker if you need a new one. Click + Add another category if you need more lines.
- When you are done, click Save split. The transaction is now split.
Split when adding a transaction
When you click Add Transaction, you can split before saving. Check Split transaction, add two or more category lines, and make sure the amounts add up exactly. Finnomia saves the parent and the split in one step.
Example: car loan payment
Record the payment on the loan account, not as a transfer from chequing. For an $85 Car Loan payment, enter $85 and split $50 as Loan Repayment (or another Loan principal type such as Honda Principal) and $35 as Interest Paid (or Honda Interest). Only the $50 reduces the amount you owe. The $35 is an expense and shows in spending. If you skip the split and categorize the whole $85 as Loan Repayment, the loan balance drops by the full $85.
If your bank also imported $85 on chequing, categorize that bank transaction as Loan Repayment or Transfer so it stays out of spending.
Remove a split
- Open the transaction and click Edit split. This opens the split menu again.
- Click Remove split. The split is removed; the original transaction stays in your list.
