Use the actual principal and interest amounts from your mortgage statement or bank. The full payment needs budget coverage; only principal reduces the amount owed.
Record the payment once
- Open Add Transaction on the account that pays the mortgage, or open its existing payment in Transactions.
- Choose Split transaction or Edit split. Enter the full payment total and divide it into principal and interest.
- Choose a category with the Loan principal processing type for principal, and a Loan interest category for interest. Categories can keep familiar names such as Mortgage Principal and Mortgage Interest. Check the processing type in Settings → Categories when needed.
- Select the mortgage under Debt account (for principal). When adding a payment, use the existing account-link option to select the mortgage.
- Save. Finnomia records the linked account effects together; do not enter the same payment again on the mortgage.
A $1,000 example
With $700 principal and $300 interest, the paying account decreases by $1,000 and the manual mortgage decreases by $700. Your Housing budget uses $1,000 when it contains both categories. Expense reporting includes $300 interest. A debt goal linked to this mortgage records the identified $700 principal contribution; its balance-based progress uses the amount still owed.
Starting balances and history
For a manual account, enter its balance and Balance as of date. Transactions before that date are historical and remain reportable without changing that confirmed balance. On the same date and later, use the balance checkbox to indicate whether the entry should affect that account. Linked accounts can have different balance dates and choices.
A connected account keeps the balance supplied by the bank. Recording or matching its payment does not subtract the amount from that bank balance again.
Correct an entry
Use Edit split to correct the total and its principal/interest amounts together. Use Correct amount or date for the date. Deleting an erroneous manual payment reverses its applicable account and goal effects together. Keep the principal/interest split rather than removing it to change the payment total.
An explicitly confirmed later balance remains the reference when you correct older activity. If the account or payment changes while you are editing, reload the form and review the current values before saving.
Interest can be reviewed through the existing Trends categories and filters. Principal stays categorized and searchable in Transactions without becoming an expense. Principal paid and net debt reduction can differ because borrowing, fees or balance corrections can also change the amount owed.
