Recurring charges hide because the statement name is not the service, the telecom invoice is one line, and annuals miss a 90-day glance. The job is to find every recurring charge, decide what stays, cancel the right biller, and prove it stopped.
This isn't a full spending audit — that's Where Is My Money Going? if the totals won't reconcile at all. It isn't a first budget — that's How to Budget in Canada. The 20-minute monthly money review glances at a new or raised PAD; it is not this cancel-athon.
Two windows
A 90-day pass catches monthly and most quarterly cycles. A 12-month lookback catches annual renewals and a descriptor that changed after a rebrand. Do both. Ninety days alone is how Prime, antivirus, and a news paywall survive.
Insurance, winter tires, property tax, and dental are a different inventory — How to Budget for Expenses That Don't Happen Every Month. Annual subscription renewals stay here.
Pull every rail
Chequing PADs, every credit card, Apple Account subscriptions, Google Play subscriptions, PayPal automatic payments if you use them, and the itemized phone or internet invoice (Rogers, Bell, Telus, Videotron, or equivalent). Secondary cards, and a spouse's card that pays household apps, count. Email search for "receipt from Apple" is a backup, not the method.
The name on the statement is not the biller
`APPLE.COM/BILL` and `GOOGLE *` are processors. One $14 Apple line can be two subscriptions. Open Apple Account subscriptions or Google Play subscriptions. Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel. If Apple billed a trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it converts.

`STRP*` and other processor codes are not the brand. `ROGERS`, `BELL`, or `TELUS` may include Crave, device protection, or storage — open the invoice, not only the PAD amount. Bank tags such as `RCUR` help and still miss custom strings and annuals.
Subscriptions sit under Personal on a Canadian list — budget categories if you need labels. Processor names are evidence, not the category — How to Categorize Spending Without Double-Counting.
Cost on one line
Amount as charged times cadence, then monthly equivalent and annual. Annual ÷ 12 is the honest monthly. Monthly × 12 is the honest annual. Don't compare a $10/month app to a $96/year Prime without converting.
Then decide: used in the last 30 days and worth the price, keep (note the next renewal). Duplicate or cheaper if you pay annually, renegotiate or switch cadence. Unused, forgotten, or "just in case," cancel. That is this household's choice, not a dollar cutoff.
Identify, then cancel the right thing
- Identify the recurring line.
- Locate the actual biller (Apple, Google, Netflix, Rogers, the gym contract).
- Cancel the contract or subscription with that biller. Keep the date, method, confirmation number, screenshot, sent-from email.
- Stop payment or cancel the PAD only if a debit is still scheduled after the service is cancelled.
- Verify on the next statement — and the one after, if there is a notice period.
Menus move; use Apple's current Canada page rather than a screenshot of Settings.
Direct-billed (Netflix, Spotify, Adobe): that account. Telecom add-on: the provider account, not the Crave app. Gym: the club contract in writing, then the PAD.
Contract, PAD, stop payment, amount owed
These are four different tools.
Cancelling the subscription is the service ending.
Cancelling the PAD agreement tells the biller to stop withdrawing. Notify the biller in writing and keep a copy. Payments Canada: the biller must process PAD cancellation within 30 days. It does not cancel the contract or the amount you owe. You still have to pay another way if you still owe. FCAC: report an incorrect or unauthorized personal PAD within 90 calendar days of the withdrawal.
Stop payment is a request to your financial institution to block a debit. Useful if a withdrawal is still scheduled after you cancelled. Check lead time and fees with the bank or credit union. It is not a cancellation of the gym membership.
Recurring credit-card charges are not PADs. Cancel with the merchant. If they continue, dispute with the issuer. One large issuer (Desjardins) tells cardholders to try the merchant first and give 15 days, then open a file. Other issuers differ in the portal, not in "merchant first."
If leftover cash is a date problem, not which subscriptions, that is cash flow versus budget.
Devon's list
The figures below are an illustrative example, not 2026 list prices and not an average Canadian stack.
Devon lives in Winnipeg. Audit date October 14, 2026. Ninety-day window: July 16 to October 14, 2026. Twelve-month lookback: October 15, 2025 to October 14, 2026.
| Statement descriptor | Normalized | Cancel with | Cadence | Amount | Monthly | Annual | In 90 days? | Decision |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | --- | --- |
| APPLE.COM/BILL | iCloud 200 GB | Apple Account | Monthly | $4 | $4 | $48 | Yes | Keep |
| APPLE.COM/BILL | Puzzle app (unused) | Apple Account | Monthly | $10 | $10 | $120 | Yes | Cancel |
| GOOGLE *YouTube | YouTube Premium | Google Play | Monthly | $14 | $14 | $168 | Yes | Keep |
| SPOTIFY | Spotify | Spotify account (card) | Monthly | $13 | $13 | $156 | Yes | Cancel (overlaps YouTube music) |
| NFLX*XXXX | Netflix | Netflix account | Monthly | $18 | $18 | $216 | Yes | Keep |
| ROGERS CABLE $148 | Crave add-on inside the $148 invoice | Rogers, not the Crave app | Monthly | $20 | $20 | $240 | Yes | Cancel add-on |
| ADOBE *CC | Adobe Photography | Adobe (PAD) | Monthly | $16 | $16 | $192 | Yes | Renegotiate to annual $144 |
| FITLIFE*GYM | Gym membership | Gym contract first, then PAD | Monthly PAD | $55 | $55 | $660 | Yes | Cancel contract |
| AMZN*PRIME | Amazon Prime | Amazon.ca | Annual (Nov 8) | $96 | $8 | $96 | No | Keep |
| NORTON * | Antivirus | Vendor auto-renew | Annual (Mar 11) | $84 | $7 | $84 | No | Cancel auto-renew |
| GLOBE*DIGITAL | News digital | Publisher | Annual (Jan 20) | $120 | $10 | $120 | No | Cancel auto-renew |
| | Identified total | | | | $175 | $2,100 | | |
$4 + $10 + $14 + $13 + $18 + $20 + $16 + $55 + $8 + $7 + $10 = $175 a month. $175 × 12 = $2,100. The annual column foots the same $2,100.
A 90-day-only pass would have caught $150 a month ($1,800 a year) and missed Prime, antivirus, and news — $25 a month, $300 a year.
Rogers: $148 invoice − $20 Crave = $128 phone and internet. Don't cancel the $128. The next invoice should read $128 if the add-on died. Some months Apple combined $4 + $10 as one $14 `APPLE.COM/BILL`. After the puzzle cancel, the next Apple charge should be $4. Adobe: $16 × 12 = $192. Annual prepaid $144. Save $48 a year, $4 a month. New monthly equivalent $12.
After the decisions
| Bucket | Monthly | Annual |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| Keep (iCloud $4 + YouTube $14 + Netflix $18 + Prime $8) | $44 | $528 |
| Renegotiated Adobe | $12 | $144 |
| Keep + renegotiate | $56 | $672 |
| Cancel (puzzle $120 + Spotify $156 + Crave $240 + gym $660 + antivirus $84 + news $120) | $115 | $1,380 |
| Adobe cadence save | $4 | $48 |
| Total identified | $175 | $2,100 |
| Annualized reduction | $119 | $1,428 |
$56 + $119 = $175. $672 + $1,428 = $2,100.
That $119 is annualized, not November cash. Puzzle, Spotify, and Crave can drop on the next cycle ($10 + $13 + $20 = $43). A gym notice dated October 14 with a 30-day clause can still produce a legitimate November PAD; December is the verify. Antivirus and news save at the next anniversary unless auto-renew is off now.
Cancellation log (cancel pile only)
| Item | Where cancelled | Evidence | Next-statement check |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Puzzle app | Apple Account subscriptions | Screenshot + Apple email | Next `APPLE.COM/BILL` = $4, not $14 |
| Spotify | Spotify account | Confirmation email | No $13 on the card |
| Crave | Rogers account | Ticket number; next invoice PDF | Rogers $128, not $148 |
| Gym | Written notice to the club first | Dated letter or email | November PAD may still debit; December must not |
| Adobe | Adobe account | Transcript switching to annual $144 | Next debit $144 once, not $16 a month |
| Antivirus | Vendor auto-renew off | Email dated October 14 | No $84 on March 11, 2027 |
| News | Publisher auto-renew off | Email dated October 14 | No $120 on January 20, 2027 |
Cancelling the FitLife PAD without cancelling the membership does not end the contract. Cancelling the membership and still seeing a PAD means the payment method is the remaining problem. A stop payment at the credit union blocks a debit; it does not erase fees the club still invoices. Devon is in Manitoba. Do not apply B.C.'s August 2026 subscription-renewal section to this gym (and in B.C., gyms are fitness contracts anyway).
Don't declare victory from the confirmation email alone.
If the charge continues
Write the biller again with the cancellation evidence. For a personal PAD, you have 90 calendar days from the withdrawal to seek reimbursement through the financial institution. For a card, dispute with the issuer after trying the merchant. Provincial consumer offices differ — use ISED's federal-provincial-territorial directory, not one statute for the whole country. The Competition Bureau takes deceptive marketing and subscription traps. It is not a refund desk. Don't close the bank account as the default.
If Rogers November is still $148 after a documented cancel, contact Rogers again, then the issuer or financial institution with the ticket.
B.C. only: August 1, 2026
As of 1 August 2026, B.C. subscription-contract auto-renewal rules (BPCPA s. 25.1) apply to B.C. consumer subscription contracts, generally where the total price is more than $50. This is not the law in Canada.
Which rules apply depends on the contract date: signed or renewed on or after 1 August 2026 follow the new law; earlier contracts follow the old rules. Fitness and gym contracts are a separate category.
Renewals of 60 days or less: cancel anytime before or after renewal, no fee, no unused-time refund. Renewals longer than 60 days: cancel anytime; the supplier must give notice 30–60 days before renewal; a prorated refund within 15 days if you cancel after renewal; future PADs or cheques cancelled within 30 days.
Ontario's Consumer Protection Act, 2023 is not in force. The 2002 Act still governs there. Everyone else: the ISED directory for their provincial office.
See the list in one place
Finnomia tracks recurring bills and subscriptions so the list is visible. It doesn't hold accounts, doesn't move money, and doesn't cancel for you. If you want those charges sitting next to the rest of the picture, start a 30-day free trial.
How do I audit subscriptions in Canada?
Pull 90 days and 12 months from every rail. Normalize `APPLE.COM/BILL` and telecom invoices to the actual biller. Convert each line to monthly and annual. Keep, renegotiate, or cancel. Cancel the contract first, then the PAD if a debit is still scheduled. Verify the next statement.
Does cancelling a PAD cancel the gym?
No. The PAD is the payment method. The membership is the contract. Cancel the club in writing first.
Is B.C.'s 2026 auto-renewal law the Canadian rule?
No. It is provincial, and it depends on when the contract was signed or renewed. Gyms in B.C. sit under fitness-contract rules, not that subscription-renewal section.
This article was published in September 2026 and is general information, not personalized legal or financial advice. Cancellation rights, PAD rules, and card-dispute processes depend on the contract, the province, and the issuer. Confirm current Apple, Google, biller, and provincial pages before you cancel.
