Managing your finances shouldn't require hours of setup, manual transaction cleanup, or troubleshooting bank connections. This week, we rolled out a substantial collection of improvements to make Finnomia easier to get started with, more flexible to use, and more dependable for Canadians managing their money.
From redesigned onboarding and smarter transaction imports to stronger Canadian bank connectivity and improved financial planning, here's what's new.
Getting started with Finnomia is easier
We've redesigned our signup and onboarding experience to help new users get up and running with less effort.
One of the biggest additions is optional sample data. If you're new to Finnomia, you can explore how the platform works before connecting your own financial accounts.
This gives you an opportunity to understand the dashboard, transactions, budgets, and other features without having to complete your entire setup first.
We've also improved the onboarding flow so you can return to an unfinished setup without unnecessarily repeating earlier steps.
When you're ready to work with your own financial information, Finnomia provides ways to connect supported institutions, import transactions, or enter financial information manually.
Smarter CSV imports and easier transaction cleanup
Bringing existing financial history into a new budgeting platform can be one of the biggest obstacles to switching.
This week's improvements make that process easier.
Finnomia now recognizes a broader range of columns commonly found in bank CSV exports, reducing the amount of preparation needed before importing transactions.
We've also improved how imported transactions are categorized and reviewed.
Category suggestions during import
Finnomia can suggest categories for imported transactions, helping reduce the amount of manual categorization needed after an import. You can review the suggestions before applying them.
A more focused cleanup experience
After importing, you can review transactions that still need categories and identify possible transfers that may require attention.
This helps separate the items that need your input from transactions that are already organized.
Safer bulk categorization
When creating or applying bulk categorization rules, Finnomia now provides a preview of the expected changes.
If a rule would replace categories you've previously chosen manually, you'll receive a warning before proceeding.
A smoother transition to connected accounts
We've also improved how imported financial history works when you subsequently connect a financial institution.
Finnomia helps identify potential matches, supports confirmation before linking transactions, and provides safeguards to help preserve existing edits and avoid duplicate records.
For Canadians moving from another budgeting platform or working with historical bank exports, these improvements make it easier to build a more complete financial picture.
Better Canadian bank connectivity and recovery
Reliable access to Canadian financial institutions remains one of our biggest development priorities.
Finnomia uses both Plaid and Flinks for financial account connectivity. Using two providers helps us support a broader range of Canadian institutions and choose appropriate connection options.
This week, we shipped several improvements to the connection experience.
Clearer reconnection guidance
When an account needs attention, Finnomia now provides more useful guidance about how to reconnect it.
Better recovery when something goes wrong
We've improved how Finnomia handles expired connection sessions, authorization windows that fail to launch, and interrupted setup attempts.
Rather than leaving users without a clear next step, the platform can offer recovery actions, restart options, and alternative approaches such as manual accounts or CSV imports where appropriate.
Improved institution discovery
We've addressed institution catalog and search issues, including a problem that prevented Coast Capital's personal banking option from appearing correctly.
We've also improved the display of institution names and strengthened the handling of Plaid and Flinks connection responses.
These changes are part of our ongoing effort to make Canadian bank connectivity more dependable, while recognizing that individual institutions and connections can occasionally require additional attention.
More control over your transactions
Transaction management is central to how people use Finnomia, and we've introduced several new options for organizing and reviewing financial activity.
Optional transaction review across all plans
You can now choose to review transactions before marking them as handled.
New transactions can appear in a dedicated Needs Review view, allowing you to work through them individually or in bulk.
Transaction review is optional, so you can choose a workflow that suits the way you manage your finances.
Saved transaction views
Create and reuse views of your transactions to focus on the information you need.
More flexible transaction tables
We've introduced additional column customization, including resizing, so you have more control over how transaction information is displayed.
Reporting exclusions and transfer handling
You can exclude appropriate transactions from reporting and work with improved transfer-linking tools.
We've also adjusted possible-transfer reviews to start collapsed, making the experience less overwhelming while keeping the relevant counts and reporting implications visible.
Together, these improvements make it easier to keep your transaction history organized without adding unnecessary work.
A more useful dashboard
We've continued refining the Finnomia dashboard to help you understand your finances and identify the things that need your attention.
The updated Your money today experience brings together useful information and actions in a more accessible format.
We've also expanded dashboard customization, including options to hide or show different information and control how transaction review activity appears.
The goal is to make the dashboard a useful starting point for managing your finances rather than simply a collection of charts and numbers.
Improvements to budgeting, goals, and financial planning
We've also shipped refinements across several of Finnomia's planning tools.
Budgets
Improvements to split transactions, refunds, spending totals, and income progress calculations help make budget reporting more accurate and easier to interpret.
Savings goals
We've improved goal allocations, deposit selection, and target-date handling.
Paused goals no longer reserve funds in budget calculations, making it easier to understand how much money is available for other priorities.
Recurring bills
We've refined recurring-bill calculations and improved the presentation of upcoming payments, including a clearer view of the next five scheduled bills.
Retirement planning
We've improved inflation timing and the handling of saved planning assumptions, including contribution amounts, tax assumptions, and retirement benefit claim ages.
Saved what-if scenarios now retain their financial assumptions more consistently.
For Canadians using Finnomia to plan around retirement income, including CPP and OAS, these improvements help make scenario comparisons more dependable.
Faster financial reports
We've also improved reporting performance by optimizing how financial information is calculated and retrieved, reducing the need to process large transaction histories in the browser.
Better household financial management
For customers using Finnomia's Family and Founder plans, we've improved how household membership and account access are handled.
This includes improvements to shared account visibility, household subscription entitlements, and options for hiding selected account transactions from household views.
Our goal is to give households a shared financial picture while providing appropriate control over what individual members share.
Continuing to improve Finnomia
One of our priorities is making Finnomia easier to use from the moment you sign up through the everyday work of managing your finances.
This week's changes represent meaningful progress, particularly in onboarding, transaction importing, bank recovery, and financial organization.
We're continuing to improve the experience based on real customer feedback, with additional work focused on setup guidance, historical transaction management, and connection reliability.
Finnomia is built in Canada for Canadians, with support for Canadian financial institutions, registered investment accounts, budgeting, debt payoff planning, cash flow forecasting, and retirement planning.
Whether you're looking for an alternative to a US-based budgeting platform or a more comprehensive way to manage your financial life, we'd welcome you to see what we're building.
Built in Canada. Built for Canada.
