How do I import my data from YNAB?

Export your plan from YNAB and import categories plus transactions in Settings.

Finnomia can import a YNAB plan export: your category groups, categories, and transaction history. On preview you can optionally import monthly Budgeted amounts as Finnomia budget targets. Leftover Available envelopes are not imported — Finnomia is target-vs-spend, not zero-based.

Export from YNAB

  1. Open the YNAB web app (export is not on mobile).
  2. Click your plan name at the top of the left sidebar.
  3. Choose Export Plan.
  4. You get a zip with two files: Register (transactions) and Budget/Plan (category tree).

Import in Finnomia

  1. Go to Settings → Data and click Import from YNAB.
  2. Upload the zip (or the two CSV/TSV files).
  3. Map each YNAB account to a Finnomia account, add a manual account, or skip it. Skipped accounts drop those transactions.
  4. Review categories. Matching names reuse Finnomia’s list (including system categories). New names are created as yours. If a name already exists in a different group, Finnomia keeps its placement unless you choose Move.
  5. Preview counts. Optionally import monthly budget amounts (skips $0 and targets you already set). Then import.

Imported rows are marked as CSV import so a later bank sync will not overwrite them. Splits and transfers in the Register file are reconstructed where the export allows it.

If you already connected the same bank in Finnomia, payee names often differ from YNAB, so some overlapping dates can still import. Import before connecting when you can, then review Transactions.
